Across rural Africa, something powerful happens when a village gets access to clean energy. Lights switch on for the first time. Children study after sunset. Women launch small businesses. Communities begin to build new futures.
At Barefoot College International, these moments happen because people around the world choose to act.
This week, there is a rare opportunity to make that action go twice as far.

A village that was “supposed” to be empty
Official reports once described Uzi Island in Zanzibar as largely uninhabited. But if you walk through the community today, you’ll find something very different.
You’ll see 100 homes powered by solar energy, lights glowing where darkness once fell early each evening. You’ll meet families building livelihoods around mangrove honey, protecting fragile mangrove forests instead of cutting them down. Nearby, farmers cultivate crops using regenerative methods while others harvest seaweed — a growing blue-economy opportunity that supports both incomes and marine ecosystems.
None of this happened by accident. It happened because people believed that renewable energy, local knowledge and women’s leadership could transform communities.
Lighting the way across africa
The work continues to grow.
Across the continent — from Niger to Senegal to Angola — Barefoot College’s regional training centres are helping communities bring solar power where grids do not reach.
The need is enormous. Roughly half of Africa’s population — about 600 million people — still live without reliable electricity.
But every village that gains access to renewable energy becomes proof that change is possible.
Solar electrification is already supporting new initiatives like:
- Electrifying a new birthing center in Senegal, improving safe maternal care
- Investing in a sustainable seaweed economy in Zanzibar, creating climate-friendly livelihoods
- Expanding community-led solar training across rural regions
And every one of these projects begins with people who decide to help.
The Big Give: When your donation doubles
This week brings a unique chance to multiply that impact. Through the annual environmental campaign run by The Big Give, every donation made during the campaign period is matched pound for pound.
That means:
- Your gift instantly doubles.
- A contribution that trains one solar engineer can help train two.
- Funding for one solar home system can reach two households.
- One act of generosity becomes twice the opportunity for communities.
Why small donations matter
Online campaigns grow through simple acts of participation.
Each donation — even a small one — helps the campaign reach more people, boosting visibility and encouraging others to support the mission. In just a few minutes, you can help bring: clean solar energy to homes without electricity, new livelihoods for rural families, leadership opportunities for women in underserved communities, climate solutions rooted in local knowledge
Small gifts spark big change.
Help Bring Light to the Next Community
Right now, communities across Africa are ready to begin their own transformation — installing solar systems, training women leaders and building sustainable economies.
Your donation this week will go twice as far.
Take one minute. Make a gift. Double the impact.
👉 Donate now and help bring light, opportunity and climate solutions to rural communities.
From everyone at Barefoot College International — and from the communities whose lives are changing because of supporters like you — thank you. 🌍✨
