Our Madagascar Story

The National Barefoot College Program aims,  by 2030, to build a network of 744 women solar engineers, enabling 630,000 isolated rural households to have sustainable access to solar electricity and services.

This program would increase the rate of access to electricity in rural areas by 12%.

Programmatic Solutions

Taught by master “women solar engineers”, trainees benefit from learning the assembly of electronic circuits and components, installation, repair, and maintenance of photovoltaic solar systems. The training modules can be summarized as follows:

  • Names of tools and spare parts used
  • Equivalence of resistor color codes
  • Calculation of resistor values
  • Circuit assembly, assembly, testing, and maintenance of LED lamps
  • Circuit assembly, assembly, testing and maintenance of regulators
  • Circuit assembly, assembly, testing and maintenance of DIVA lanterns
  • Installation of solar home systems
  • Assembly of the solar system for the community solar house
  • Revision, and visit of the electrified village nearby
Solar training lasts 15 weeks, 5 days a week from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with three breaks.

The training lasts approximately 750 hours, including 180 hours of literacy training, 250 hours of sewing and 320 hours of various Barefoot Enriche modules.

An important place is given to literacy because it helps to assimilate the various modules (financial inclusion, entrepreneurship, use of modern technology such as the telephone and the calculating machine, sewing, etc.) while meeting the needs of the apprentices.
