The Government vs the Community Approach to planning and implementation of a piped water supply system in a village has been compared. How the community has managed to do it themselves without using government technical expertise; how the community pay for the water every month for repair and maintenance of the system.

Shows how people in 4 villages of 2000 population have installed, repaired and maintained through community contributions, their piped water supply needs since 1989. No technical assistance was taken by the government.


THE HAND PUMP MISTRY

‘ Mistry' is the Hindi word for mechanic.. The film explains the details of the One Tier System of repairing hand pumps, with community support. No engineer is required from outside the village to repair the India Mark II hand pumps.


WHAT CAN A HAND PUMP MISTRY DO?

Shows how a primary school-pass village youth can carry out all minor and major repairs on the India Mark II hand pump. This system reduces the cost of maintenance on the pump from $50 per hand pump per year to less than $20 per hand pump per year.

Technology transfer from one part of the country, in this case Rajasthan, to the remote inaccessible villages, situated in the high altitude region of Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir. Installation, repairs and maintenance technology of handpumps by people is presented here to demystify the technology for wider dissemination. SWRC's efforts in taking up the challenge of a low-cost one-time investment by handpump installation in Ladakh region is a practical demonstration of what needs to be done in meeting the drinking water needs of regions which face scarcity due to their remoteness and inaccessibility.

This slide show documents rural communities' collective efforts in 4 villages of Ajmer District Rajasthan to install, manage and control piped water supply systems. This presentation focuses on how SWRC's initiatives with rural communities has vindicated its low-cost community based approach to manage and sustain piped water systems as against other cost intensive systems adopted by the government.
